A suit should look composed while feeling easy. These five checks reveal whether the garment is working with your body or fighting it.
1. The shoulder lies cleanly
The jacket shoulder should end where your natural shoulder ends. Divots, dents, or an overhanging sleeve head usually mean the shoulder width needs attention.
2. The collar stays close
The jacket collar should rest against the shirt collar without a visible gap. It should also remain comfortable when you turn your head or reach forward.
3. The front closes without strain
When the jacket is buttoned, the lapels should lie flat and the button should not pull deep horizontal creases across the waist. A little shaping is elegant; tension is not.
4. The lengths feel intentional
Shirt cuff should show neatly beneath the jacket sleeve. Trouser break can be clean or softly relaxed, but excess fabric should not pool over the shoe.
5. You can move naturally
Sit, walk, reach, and raise your arms during a fitting. Tailoring should refine your silhouette without asking you to stand unnaturally still.
A strong fit is visible in repose and convincing in motion.
Small sleeve, waist, and trouser adjustments can transform a nearly-right suit. Shoulder and balance corrections are more structural, which is why an early fitting matters.
